The structure behind it all.
Bringing the car together through structural design, safety, and manufacturing. Members learn to coordinate across the entire vehicle.
WILD HARE RACINGSOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITYFrom the classroom to the starting line. We’re Wild Hare Racing, South Dakota State University’s student-led Formula SAE team.
Explore what we build ↘
Students working together to design, build, and race a car.
Wild Hare Racing brings SDSU students together to design, manufacture, assemble, and compete with a formula-style race car. We turn engineering concepts into real components—and learn what it takes to make them work together.
Beyond the car, our members manage fundraising, business relationships, marketing, and competition logistics. It’s hands-on experience with real responsibility.
Formula SAE is a collegiate engineering competition where students design, build, and test a formula-style race car. Teams bring their cars together to demonstrate both vehicle performance and the thinking behind their work.
It takes more than driving fast. Students explain engineering decisions, consider costs, and present a business case—combining technical skills with teamwork and communication.

Meet the subteams that bring our student-led racing program together.
Bringing the car together through structural design, safety, and manufacturing. Members learn to coordinate across the entire vehicle.
Understanding how the car handles and responds to the track through vehicle dynamics, mechanical design, and testing.
Exploring how airflow influences the car and connecting engineering analysis with practical manufacturing skills.
Working with the systems that deliver power to the wheels while building skills in assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Supporting the car and driver through electronics, wiring, and programming. A home for curious problem-solvers who enjoy making systems work together.
Focusing on how the driver interacts with the vehicle, with attention to comfort, usability, and reliable operation.
The fabrication team brings ideas to life through hands-on manufacturing, assembly, and workshop problem-solving. Members build practical skills and work alongside the engineering subteams.
The business and marketing team supports sponsorships, communications, budgeting, and logistics. Members help tell our story and connect the project with the people who make it possible.
Many disciplines. One student-built car.

Representing SDSU, meeting our community, and sharing a love of motorsport.
Celebrating SDSU with the community we call home.

Bonnie, Little Blue and our team trailer joined the Hobo Day parade through Brookings. It was a chance to celebrate with fellow Jackrabbits, share our student-built cars and represent SDSU beyond the shop.
Thank you, HOWE. We appreciate HOWE pulling our trailer and helping bring Wild Hare Racing to the parade.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2026We brought our Formula SAE car to the pre-race car show, met racing fans, and experienced a day of motorsport together.
Members explored pit road, collected signatures, and gathered for photos at the finish line. Thank you to Kansas Speedway and NASCAR for helping make the experience possible.
SEPTEMBER 10, 2026Celebrating SDSU and the community that supports student opportunities.
Our car display offered a close-up look at student engineering. Kumar, dean of the College of Engineering, joined us in the cockpit as we shared the project with the SDSU community.
AUGUST 27, 2026Bringing Wild Hare Racing to downtown Brookings for SDSU Night.
We met community members and shared our Formula SAE car during SDSU Night. President Barry Dunn stopped by and climbed into the cockpit for a photo.
Help students take an idea from a first sketch to the competition track.
How sponsorship helps.
Sponsorship supports materials, manufacturing, testing, travel, and the experience of building something together. We welcome financial support, materials, services, and technical expertise.
All sponsors receive monthly team updates. Recognition and opportunities to connect with the team grow with your partnership.
Thank you to the companies supporting Wild Hare Racing.
